Letter: Kunelius, Storm are good match
The following letter to the editor appeared in the Maynard/Stow
Beacon Thursday, December 26, 2002
Much has been written and discussed recently about the possible
move of Eye of the Storm to the Kunelius property on Red Acre Road
in Stow. As the founder of the Eye of the Storm, I thought I would
express how excited I am at the possibility of taking advantage
of this once in a lifetime opportunity.
Eye of the Storm is a non-profit horse rescue organization in Stow.
Founded in 1994, we take care of between 15 and 20 horses per year.
It amazes me that such beautiful, noble and intelligent creatures
can be so quickly written off when they have non life threatening
health problems, but it happens all the time. We have all kinds
of horses, including ponies, morgans, Arabians and thoroughbreds.
We find that with the right care and attention, these animals can
live long and happy lives.
The future of Eye of the Storm at its current rented facilities
is not certain. An ongoing search has not identified available farms
in the vicinity. To relocate to a farm at great distance would jeopardize
the human resources of local volunteers and horse professionals
that Eye of the Storm is so dependent upon. If the town decides
to exercise its right of first refusal between now and the middle
of February, we are confident that we will be able to move our organization
to an existing horse farm that is just right. We wouldn't need to
build a new barn, corral or ring, and it is only about a mile from
where we are now.
We have been working closely with conservation organizations and
the newly formed citizen group, Friends of Red Acre in order to
put together a financing package. It would be amazing to bring equine
rescue back to Red Acre Road, since that was the original place
where it was located in Stow during the 1900s through 1980s. Right
now it looks like the Kunelius Farm and its associated wetlands
can be preserved without building or tearing down anything.
Right now we have to make sure the selectmen know that Eye of the
Storm belongs on Red Acre Road. Let them know that you support their
possible purchase of this land in partnership with a coalition of
non-profit organizations.
