BessDied Winter 2002, Stow, Massachusetts

Bess was a sweet and lovable old girl. Nina Arbella rescued Bess and Junebug when their owner had died. The two of them had lived in a big field with enough grass to make them much too fat and no exercise to work it off.

Because of a lack of room in the barn, the two spotted ponies first lived at the Eye of the Storm "annex," a private home nearby with a small barn. Their arrival was a pleasant surprise to the owner of the "Annex." She arrived home from work to find Nina there, a smile on her face. "Take a look at what's in your barn," Nina said. The owner peeked into the barn and saw nothing different. No horse heads showing over the stall door. "No, look IN the stall," Nina said. The owner then peeked into the stall and saw not one but TWO little spotted ponies. What an adorable sight!

The ponies had to move after several months, when the grass and weeds at the annex became too lush. Bess discovered a large clump of Bugleweed, a type of Ajuga. Bugleweed is a medicinal herb, but in large doses it's a narcotic. All the other horses that had lived at the annex avoided it, but Bess sought it out! She colicked on the Bugleweed and almost died one long night. To everyone's surprise she pulled through and went on to live several more happy years at Eye of the Storm.
