The Giving Spirit
By Steve, the Pony Man
... The Girl Scouts made cookies and sold them, donating
the profit... An anonymous gift certificate from Erickson's
Feed and Grain arrived in the mail... An e-mail arrived telling
us that a family had decided to donate the money they would
spend on holiday gifts for their family to our rescue farm...
A phone call came in asking where to drop off a donation...
A check arrived with a note asking us to set up a memorial
for a beloved horse that we had helped before she passed away...
These are but a small part of what makes up the family of
friends and care givers at Eye of the Storm Equine Rescue
in Stow, Massachusetts. This holiday season would you please
remember us? Eye of the Storm is a 501(c)3 non-profit charity
recognized as a 'Blue Icon' charity by GuideStar Philanthropic
Research, Inc. Your donation is tax deductible up to 50% of
your income. No donation is too small. Every penny counts
and it all goes to help the horses that come into our circle.
Please help us continue our mission of saving abused, neglected,
unwanted and special needs horses. We can't save every horse,
but we can save some as well as provide information and advice,
and provide a network of support for horses and their owners.
If you can send a donation, please make your check payable
to Eye of the Storm Equine Rescue, Inc., and mail it to us
at 65 White Pond Road, Stow, MA 01775. You can also donate
online though PayPal. Just visit our website
and click on the MasterCard / Visa logo. And if money is as
tight for you as it is for us, we'd still love it if you dropped
us a card or a note to say hello.
Thank you and may God Bless you for considering Eye of the
Storm in your holiday giving.
In Memory of Magic
Magic still exists - in a garden at a farm - and in our hearts
- at peace forever. We held this little pony in our arms,
we cared for her, we tried to fix her, but we could not.
Magic was too broken. Her tiny shoulder had been smashed
in an accident and she had been left to heal on her own. We
found Magic too late. What we could do was provide comfort,
care and love to Magic before the best veterinarians and a
master farrier confirmed what we suspected in our hearts.
Her body could not be repaired. She dropped ever so lightly
into our arms as the veterinarian administered the medication
that took her pain away forever. She was so tiny, so sweet,
so brave and now in peace.
In his book, Le Petit Prince, Antoine De Saint-Exupery wrote:
"Here is my secret. It's quite simple: One sees clearly
only with the heart. Anything else essential is invisible
to the eyes." Many wonderful people saw clearly with
their hearts that day and one magical spirit was set free
of her little wounded body surrounded in love.
Jazz
In the spring of 2003 Eye of the Storm got a call about a
pony named Jazz who needed a home. Nineteen year old Jazz,
a cross between a Shetland and a Morgan, had been living with
an elderly couple who could no longer care for her. Because
Jazz has Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), also
known as heaves, she had trouble finding a new owner.
When Jazz arrived at Eye of the Storm, she found herself
in unfamiliar company with other horses. At the sight of another
horse Jazz pulled back her ears and whinnied. Nina felt Jazz
would be less anxious in a setting with fewer horses. Luckily
a Harvard family had offered a single stall space to a horse
that might need a home. They have several acres of pasture,
two sheep, and room in the barn for one small horse or pony.
Since horses are herd animals this would not usually be an
optimum situation for a horse. However, it turned out to be
the perfect placement for Jazz, who is used to being on her
own.
